Counter Offer

This employment life preserver can sometimes sink a business relationship.

A counter offer is an enticement from your current employer to stay with the company; a promise of more money, benefits, promotion, etc. It's much less expensive to keep a seasoned employee, verses training someone new they hope will deliver your excellence.

Before deciding to accept or reject a counter offer, consider the statements and questions listed below:

  • -Why did you start looking for another job; are you unhappy where you are?
  • -If you are unhappy with your employer, do you think throwing money at the problem will improve your circumstances; could you live with staying put?
  • -A large percentage of those who accept counter offers begin looking for other work or are terminated within a year.
  • -If my employer pays this incentive, will they feel leveraged; doubt your loyalty; loose trust? Will it destroy my working relationship?
  • -If I described the best possible work environment, would it look like my current employer?
  • -Why did my employer only pay what I'm worth only after I considered other job opportunities?
  • -Will my future and growth in the company be stymied?
